“…believe in a love that is being stored up for you like an inheritance, and have faith that in this love there is a strength and a blessing so large that you can travel as far as you wish without having to step outside it.” –Rainer Maria Rilke
What love is this? I believe the love that is being stored up for us like an inheritance can only be the love that by nature exists inside our own hearts. I think it is easy to overlook this potent truth hell bent as we can sometimes be on caving in to smallness, to negativity, and believing the worst about ourselves. Though it may be hard to imagine, when we suspend judgment on that front and sit quietly in dark moments with the possibility that everything we’ve ever been looking for has been with us all along, love’s essence is released like the sweet perfume of those rare and wild orchids that bloom only in the night.
Our disappointments, unfortunately, have the tendency to blunt our sensitivity to this nuanced presence in our lives. When we become obsessed with our internal arguments with the world, it is next to impossible to sense any of the heart’s yearning or wise counsel.
So keep the channel open. Tend to the wellbeing of your heart as you would a rare and wild orchid—with sensitivity, intelligence, respect, constancy and quiet care.
Then travel as far as you wish knowing that you are loved.
